Boss Secures Melbourne Cup Ride Aboard Kelinni

Leading jockey Glen Boss has been booked to ride Kelinni in the Melbourne Cup after the Chris Waller-trained gelding secured his place in Tuesday’s $6 million staying test with a strong win in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington today.

Boss rode Geelong Cup winner Gatewood in the Lexus today and was booked to ride should he have qualified for the Melbourne Cup but the OTI-owned stayer was unable to show the same zip as he did at Geelong and was beaten 2 1/2 lengths in sixth place.

Boss’ manager Reece Murphy confirmed on twitter that the star rider has been booked to partner Kelinni on Tuesday.

“Glen boss to ride Kelinni in cup,” Murphy tweeted.

Boss’ last Melbourne Cup ride resulted in a ninth-place finish aboard Illustrious Blue in 2010 but he is a part of Cup history for his three consecutive wins on champion Makybe Diva from 2003-05.

Kelinni was rated a $9.50 chance in today’s Lexus Stakes but produced a performance that suggested he is ready to mix it with the high quality stayers in the Melbourne Cup.

The Refuse To Blend gelding has Waller excited heading into Tuesday after he bolted through the line to win by a long-neck from Dare To Dream and Exceptionally.

“We purposefully kept him for this race, hoping that he could qualify and still have some life left in him and if we had run him before today we would have run the risk of running him too many times,” Waller said.

“It’s a great feeling to be a part of the race.

“Two miles shouldn’t be a problem at all.”
