Boban New Favourite In Memsie Stakes Betting

Boban is into 2014 Memsie Stakes odds of $4 and is now a clear favourite in betting markets for the Group 1 event at Caulfield on Saturday after being extremely well-backed since betting opened yesterday.

Boban opened at a quote of $6.50 to score his fourth Group 1 victory in the Memsie Stakes and has received consistent support in betting in the last 24 hours to become the punters elect for the $400,000 race.

Trainer Chris Waller elected to scratch Boban from the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick last weekend and he is happy with the expected firm surface at Caulfield, but admits that he is slightly concerned about the wide barrier draw for the son of Bernardini.

“The track is a dead four at the moment, so hopefully it stays there,” Waller said.

“I’ve looked at the weather forecast there a few times and it looks pretty promising for us, which is good.

“It is a star-studded line-up the Memsie Stakes this year and he is going to have his work cut out, but gee he is a good horse.

“He has won at Caulfield before, but he has drawn nine of 11 and that is a bad draw because it means he is going to have to go around all of them and beating good horses in that fashion is very difficult.

“He likes races like and he likes a bit of room, so if anything it is probably a good draw for him.”

Messene opened as favourite in Memsie Stakes betting markets and was quickly backed into $4.20, but has now drifted out to a quote of $4.40 after the avalanche of support for Boban.

Like Boban, Messene was scratched from the Warwick Stakes last weekend because of the heavy track and will be going into the Memsie Stakes second-up after his impressive first-up performance in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on August 9.

Sweet Idea scored a narrow win over Messene in the Missile Stakes and the talented mare has also been well-backed in the 2014 Memsie Stakes betting market with Ladbrokes Australia.

The four-year-old opened at the lengthy Memsie Stakes odds of $9.50, but she was quickly backed into $6.50 and is now available at a quote of $5.50 to score her maiden win at Group 1 level.

Moment Of Change has been one of the biggest drifters in 2014 Memsie Stakes betting and he is now out to odds of $6 after being available at $6 when betting opened after the field was released earlier in the week.

The Peter Moody-trained sprinter has an excellent record over 1400 metres at Caulfield and is chasing his fourth Group 1 victory over the track and distance after taking out the 2012 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, 2014 Orr Stakes and 2014 Futurity Stakes.

Other drifters in Memsie Stakes betting include Happy Trails ($8 out to $17), Puissance De Lune ($6 out to $11), Dissident ($11 out to $17) and Gig ($31 out to $61).
