The Robert Heathcote trained Bewhatyouwannabe scored an upset win in the Listed $100,000 James Boag’s Premium Members’ Handicap (1600m) at Doomben today.
Starting at the handy odds of $12 and paying $15 for the win at Ladbrokes.com.au, Bewhatyouwannabe was able to save some face for the locals after the first three races on the program where taken out by the visiting trainers.
Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller picked up the first two races with Ballet Suite winning the Listed $100,000 City Property Services Princess Stakes (2000m) and Sadler’s Lake leading all the way to win the Group 3 $125,000 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m).
Then Randwick trainers Peter and Paul Snowden won the Listed $100,000 Designline Graphics Juanmo Stakes (1200m) with I’ve Got The Looks.
Bewhatyouwannabe has been a consistent performer for Heathcote with three placings and two fourths from his last five starts and he deserved to breakthrough for today’s win.
Winning jockey Michael Cahill had the Fastnet Rock five year old settled back in the field and made a late charge to the lead over the final fifty metres to score a neck win over the Kelly Schweida trained Epic ($6) with another neck to third placegetter Trakstar ($11).
“I had a nice run in the race and he finished off well,” Cahill said.
Runner up Epic’s performance was outstanding after Luke Tarrant made a long run from the 800m and the seven year old was one of the widest runners on the home turn.
The $3.70 favourite Neo enjoyed a nice run just behind the leaders but when the pressure was on faded in the straight to miss a place.
Topweight Laser Hawk ($6) also raced on the pace but jockey Hugh Bowman was forced to start urging the six year old along from before the home turn and he struggled in the straight under the 60kg.
