Best Years Still Lie Ahead For Single

Four-year-old gelding Single will feature at Rosehill this weekend as he attempts to overcome a disappointing performance in Sydney last start.

The High Chaparral gelding finished fourth by four lengths in the Happy New Year From ATC Handicap on December 31.

Trainer Craig Carmody conceded the result was both unsatisfactory and unexpected.

“On face value it did appear a little disappointing,” Carmody said.

“(But) it was a little bit of stop start tempo and it may not of (sic) suited him.”

The trainer believes Single is back at his best in time for this Saturday’s Vinery Stud Handicap.

“I’m very happy going into Saturday,” he said.

“Stepping up to the 1,800 (metres) I feel certain, and drawn where he is, he should get a nice run.”

Single has drawn barrier five for the race and will be ridden by jockey Nathan Berry, who has ridden him in his past two starts.

“We’re hoping on another brilliant Nathan Berry ride and (that) luck goes our way,” Carmody said.

It has been three weeks since Single’s last run, which Carmody says is something the horse needs.

“He’s not a horse you can race every two weeks, his runs take a little bit out of him,” he said.

“I tend to give him a little bit of a space between runs…and he looks all the better for it.”

The Randwick trainer is confident Single will be at his best as a five-year-old.

“Even after this prep I think he’ll benefit from a break again,” Carmody said.

“I think his better seasons are ahead of him.”

Single has won three of his seven career starts and has earned more than $100,000 in prize money.
