Thousand Guineas winner Amicus will need plenty of luck from a wide barrier in the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
Amicus was able to score a narrow first up win over Press Report in the Group 2 $175,000 NSW Thoroughbred Breeders NSW Breeders Classic (1200m) at Randwick on February 6.
But at her next start in the Group 2 $175,000 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick three weeks later was caught wide early from an outside gate and Hugh Bowman decided to push forward.
The Fastnet Rock mare then raced outside the leader and winner Solicit before fading in the straight to finish ninth of ten.
Amicus has drawn wide again at barrier twelve in the thirteen horse Coolmore Classic field of fillies and mares and trainer Chris Waller knows the mare will need more than her share of luck to find her way back to the winner’s stall.
Tim Clark takes over from Bowman who will riding Preferment in for the stable in the Group 1 $1.5m Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington and Waller said that he will be instructing him to go back from the wide alley.
“Amicus, barrier twelve, we will go back on her,” Waller said.
“Disappointing last start, she had no luck what so ever, put a line through that. But she is obviously going to need a bit of luck on Saturday.”
Waller will also saddle up win in the Coolmore Classic and is giving the Mossman mare a good chance of causing an upset win following her good first up second to First Seal in the Group 2 $175,000 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on February 20.
Jason Collett rides Telepathic and Waller can see her getting a good run from barrier three.
“Barrier three, great gate for her. She is a knock out chance,” Waller said.
“Her run behind First Seal three weeks ago was fantastic. She is going to get a lovely run, on 52kg, she will be in the finish.”
Waller’s two Coolmore Classic runners are both at double figure odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with Amicus marked at $11 just ahead of Telephatic at $12.
John O’Shea’s unbeaten filly Ghisoni is at the top of the market order at $4.60 just ahead of Victorian mare Azkadellia at $4.80 with Solicit also well in the betting at $6.
Coolmore Classic market order at Ladbrokes.com.au: $4.60 Ghisoni, $4.80 Azkadellia, $6 Solicit, $11 Amicus, $12 Politeness, Telephatic, $15 Peeping, Zanbagh, Tinto, $16 Lucia Valentina, $18 Slightly Sweet, $26 Pearls, $34 Vergara.
