Michael Freedman’s airborne filly Apocalyptic is the odds-on favourite to secure her third straight win in the Princess Series, headlining the 2025 Flight Stakes field and betting markets at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

The Group 1 $750,000 feature, one of three elite-level races on the Sydney card for Epsom Handicap Day, features an 11-filly field of top-line three-year-olds, led by Apocalyptic at $1.90 in Flight Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.

Apocalyptic Poised for Series Sweep

The daughter of Extreme Choice will jump from barrier seven, a gate that hasn’t produced a winner in over 25 years, but she enters the mile event in terrific form, having already claimed the Group 2 Furious Stakes – Tea Rose Stakes double in her two latest starts.

Lightly raced with just her fourth career run on the weekend, she continues to live up to the hype and is strongly favoured to handle the 1600m distance.

When up to 1400m in the Tea Rose, she was dominant, saluting by nearly two lengths in a performance that left Freedman singing her praises.

“To do what she did and let down like she did, from a training perspective you don’t get too many horses in your hands that can do that,” he said.

“She certainly finished off today like a filly that should relish the mile.”

Zougotcha (2022) was the last filly to complete the Tea Rose Stakes – Flight Stakes double, and the money is firmly on Apocalyptic, with Tommy Berry retaining the ride, to be the next.

Key Opposition and Value Chances

The main danger at Flight Stakes odds of $6.50 is the consistent Annabel & Rob Archibald-trained Tupakara, who draws the outside barrier.

The Trapeze Artist filly remains a maiden after eight starts but has been racing well, with five top-three placings including a Group 1 Champagne Stakes third.

She comes via the traditional path, running second in the Furious and third in the Tea Rose Stakes, and has the benefit of two previous mile runs.

Two other fillies are being kept safe under $10: Bjorn Baker’s Within The Law ($8) and Gary Portelli’s Queen Of Clubs ($8).

Within The Law, runner-up in the Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old, has disappointed in her last two starts but is rock-hard fit and back up to a mile from gate two.

Queen Of Clubs, who ran fourth in the Tea Rose, is drawn a treat in barrier four for Nash Rawiller in her acid test this weekend.

Tea Rose runner-up Artistic Venture is $11 to turn the tables, while Freedman also saddles up well-bred Frankel filly Magenta Skies ($15), who comes via a lead-up maiden win at Newcastle.

The 2025 Flight Stakes is set to run as Randwick Race 6 at 3:00pm (AEST) as the first of the three Group 1 races on the 10-event card.
