Speed machine Anders raced into calculations for an Everest slot with a brilliant all the way win in the Group 3 $160,000 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill today.
Anders raced up to his last start four and three quarters lengths win on a heavy 9 track in the Listed $140,000 Schweppes Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill three weeks ago and dismissed claims that he was just a wet track specialist.
Back on top of the ground today Anders ran a sensational 1.02.67 secs for the 1100m and co-trainer Ciaron Maher said that the Not A Single Doubt colt will have no trouble stepping up to the 1200m of the $15m The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 17.
“I think he could yeah. Last start he relaxed very well. I was mindful he was going from a wet track to a good track so I wanted to keep that ping in him. James will give you a better indication. It looked like he revved up a little today,” Maher said.
“I would not be afraid to put him into any race. Because of his speed, I always thought the Moir at Moonee Valley over the 1000m with a decent weight pull on the older horses would be an ideal race for him.”
“The Everest you would have to consider it. He was very impressive. I can’t wait to have a look at the sectionals. I was a little nervous when he was peeling off 10s but to hold that – there are not many that run those sectionals and be strong on the line. It gets you going a bit.”
“Yeah that was very good. I was saying to one of the owners that he is possibly our best. I was hoping he would do something like that today.”
James McDonald let Anders ($2.80 equal favourite) stride to the front shortly after the start and he quickly established a five lengths lead in the middle stages.
Anders maintained that lead into the straight and his opposition hardly made any impression in the run to the line with runner Peltzer ($2.80 equal favourite) finishing three and quarter lengths behind the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained colt.
The John Thompson trained Mamaragan ($6) ran into third spot well ahead of fourth placegetter Every Rose ($31).
Anders is now marked at $12 for The Everest with Ladbrokes.com.au.
