The AJC Derby / AJC Oaks double might be a tough ask for in-form filly Shamrocker

Danny O’Brien is not convinced of his chances of claiming the AJC Derby/AJC Oaks double with Shamrocker this Saturday April 16, 2011.

Shamrocker, who became the first filly in 22 years to win the AJC Australian Derby last weekend, is currently the overwhelming favourite to win the Oaks.

Her trainer feels that his filly may be facing an even more talented field when she takes to the track in two days time.

“If anything, I’d say I was more confident of winning the Derby,” O’Brien said.

“The Oaks looks deeper to me.

While Shamrocker has proven herself on many occasions, O’Brien realises the big name stayers that will stand in her way in the Oaks.

“Brazilian Pulse will be hard to beat; (Peter) Moody’s got one (Do Ra Mi); Absolutely was good in Adelaide last start; Pinker Pinker’s classy and Dating was unlucky in the New Zealand Oaks last start,” O’Brien said.

“I’d say we’ve still got a pretty serious hoop to jump through, there are heaps of them with chances.”

On the topic of Shamrocker’s short 7-day turnaround from her AJC Derby win, O’Brien said that was not a concern.

“She’s in great nick,” he said.

“I’m not too worried about it.”
