Tough mares Daysee Doom and Dixie Blossoms ran the quinella for trainer Ron Quinton in the Group 2 $400,000 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill today.
Daysee Doom ($5.50) was able to overcome a wide barrier and a three wide passage to have a head to spare over her stablemate Dixie Blossoms ($7) with the Chris Waller trained Omei Sword ($4.20 favourite) finishing in third spot.
Winning trainer Ron Quinton said that he couldn’t split his two mares before the race and suggested a dead heat could have been a fitting result.
“People asked me if I could split them, but I couldn’t really,” Quinton said.
“I wasn’t far out and a very fitting result, but it would have been better if it was a dead heat.”
“They are both in great form and onwards and upwards.”
Quinton will now find it hard to split the two mares in the future and they could clash again in the Group 3 $150,000 Angst Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on October 7 before heading to Melbourne for the end of the Spring Carnival.
“I will probably run them in the Angst at Randwick at a mile and then we might go to Melbourne,” Quinton said.
Winning jockey Andrew Adkins had no option but to sit three wide on Daysee Doom from a wide gate but said the mare travelled nicely and dug deep at the finish.
