Vega Magic is set to contest both the 2017 Memsie Stakes and The Everest following an impressive return to the races in the 2017 Regal Roller Stakes at Caulfield this afternoon.
Vega Magic had a big weight on his back and was caught wide throughout the Regal Roller Stakes, but he was still able to hold-off a flying Brave Smash to make it two wins from as many starts for the Lindsay Park operation.
Co-trainer David Hayes has had a large opinion of Vega Magic since he joined his stable earlier this year and he confirmed that both the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in a fortnight and The Everest are both on the agenda for The Goodwood winner.
“He didn’t get many favours from the gate with 60 kilos and he got attacked by the young horse from Japan,” Hayes said.
“It was a huge effort.
“He was great odds today.
“He has won over 1400 metres and he will go for the Memsie.
“He will be freshened up and hopefully somebody wants him for The Everest.
“I am thinking that he will run huge in the Memsie and he will get snapped up.
“We will dangle carrots everywhere.”
Brave Smash was making his Australian racing debut after being competitive at the highest level of racing in Japan and he suggested that he is in for a big 2017 Spring Racing Carnival with a fast-finishing second.
