Multiple Group 1 winner Le Romain is the standout in the nominations for the Group 2 $200,000 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
The Australian Turf Club has extended the nominations dead line for the Missile Stakes until 11am on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, after only thirteen horses were among the original entries for the weight for age sprint.
Other high profile sprinters entered for the Missile Stakes are the Ron Quinton trained Boss Lane, The Monstar from the Brett Cavanogh stable, Victorian sprinter Jungle Edge and the Peter and Paul Snowden trained stablemates, Group 1 winner Tycoon Tara and the speedy That’s A Good Idea.
Trainer Kris Lees has pencilled in the Group 1 $1m Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September 2 as an early Spring Carnival target for Le Romain who has been prepared for his comeback run in the Missile Stakes with an impressive win in a 1000m barrier trial at Newcastle on July 18.
“He’s come back in good order. He’s pretty professional and did everything right,” Lees told racing.com.
“We’ll probably head to the Memsie second-up so if we start off first-up in the Missile in Sydney, we’ll have four weeks to prepare for the race in Melbourne.”
“Le Romain is definitely a bit stronger.”
“He has grown into his body, and I’m looking forward to getting him back to the races.”
Jockey Glyn Schofield has been booked for the Missile Stakes ride on Le Romain who will be having his first start since running second to Tivaci in the Group 1 $600,000 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick at the end of the 2017 Sydney Autumn Carnival on April 15.
Lees has also nominated stablemate Invincible Gem for the Missile Stakes and soon to be four year old mare is also resuming, not having raced since running second to Inference in the Group 1 $1m Girvan Waugh Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Randwick during the Sydney Autumn Carnival in early March.
Tycoon Tara has had a short freshen up since claiming a Group 1 victory during the Brisbane Winter Carnival when she led all of the way to take out the $500,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) at Doomben on June 24.
The consistent The Monstar looks likely to return to Randwick on Saturday in the Missile Stakes and is hoping for a repeat of his last outing there when he careered away to record a five and three quarter lengths win in the Listed $150,000 June Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on June 10.
The Monstar was then relegated to the runner’s up stall at his last two starts in the Listed $150,000 Civic Stakes (1350m) at Rosehill on July 1 and in the Listed $160,000 Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton on July 12.
Cranbourne trainer Mick Bell will be hoping the wet weather sticks around for the weekend after nominating his noted wet tracker Jungle Edge for the Missile Stakes.
The Bureau Of Meteorology have forecast the end of the week to be the same as the beginning of the week with showers which will suit Jungle Edge who has won all of his eleven victories on rain affected tracks.
Boss Lane is a four times winner over the same course and distance as the Missile Stakes and is coming off a last start win in the $100,000 July Sprint (1100m) at Randwick on July 22.
