Bold Glance was the star Queenslander during the Sydney Autumn Carnival punching well and truly above his weight and coming up with some good results in tough races.

The most impressive was no doubt running third at big odds in the Doncaster, swooping up the inside rails to make up plenty of ground late

Toowoomba trainer Norm Hilton is the man behind the success and is hoping he can run even better on Brisbane soil during the winner.

His first test will come this weekend in the BTC Sprint and while his Sydney runs were on heavy tracks, the good rating is certainly not an issue.

“We were really happy with his run and we still think he handles the dry better than the wet anyway,” Hilton said.

“We brought him home straight after the Doncaster and gave him a few weeks doing nothing.

“Since then he’s been back in full work, working well and he’s fit and happy.”

The tough Autumn doesn’t seem to have taken any sting out of him either and if anything it’s probably given him an edge in fitness

“He’s still got that residual fitness sitting there and I think he’ll run a big race this Saturday,” he said

He hasn’t been the most fortunate horse when it comes to the barrier draw and that’s happened again, stuck out wide on a track where it pays to be towards the inside.

We’ve only seen him run back off the pace so far but Hilton has hinted that he may be versatile enough to run in a couple of positions.

“He usually starts pretty well, I’ll talk to Scott Seamer and see whether we go forward or back,” he said.

Also working against him from those Sydney runs is the weight he’s incurred but Hilton isn’t overly phased by that either.

“He’s matured and got bigger and stronger and I Think he’ll handle the weight no problems,” he said.

Bold Glance was entered for the BTC Sprint instead of the Doomben 10,000 to avoid a meeting with Black Caviar but he will return to Group 1 level in his next race when he tackles the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm in June.
