Consistent sprinter Sprit Of Boom will begin what is set to be a lengthy campaign in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) at Royal Randwick on September 21.

Trainer Tony Gollan is chasing his first Group 1 victory with Spirit Of Boom and is hopeful that the six-year-old can finish his campaign with a win in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot in November.

Gollan said that he is delighted with the condition of the Sequalo entire ahead of what he hopes will be a breakthrough 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.

“I’ve had so much trouble with ‘Spirit’ for more than 12 months, but we’ve got him right now,” Gollan told TVN.

“He’s in terrific shape, this time he has come back really well and I’m looking to a big prep from him.

“This is the best I’ve probably ever had him and I’m expecting some good things from him this time in work.”

Spirit Of Boom strung together a number of his usual consistent performances during the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival but was unable to breakthrough for his first race victory since the Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast on January 2 last year.

He finished second behind Buffering in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) and was slightly disappointing in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) on a heavy track a fortnight later.

The six-year-old bounced back to form when finishing fourth behind Epaulette in the Doomben 10,000 (1350m) and missed the placings by the narrowest of margins in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).

Spirit Of Boom will tackle a similar path this year as he did during the 2012 Spring Racing Carnival but Gollan appears confident he can improve on his fourth place finish in The Shorts and his close third behind Barakey in the Winterbottom Stakes.
