In what could be unprecedented circumstances for the Stradbroke Handicap a horse that isn’t even guaranteed a spot in the field has been listed as a clear cut early favourite.
Upon the release of weights today bookmakers have reportedly taken a flood of money for Sincero which needs to jump more than 20 spots on the order of entry to gain a start.
The three-year-old was given the 49.5kg bottom weight for the race and punters quickly found him at the bottom of the list.
Sincero is currently 41st on the order of entry and with only a few weeks until the race he’ll need to claim a big prize to jump high enough on the ballot.
Trainer Stephen Farley has picked out the QTC Cup over 1300m, however that’s just one week before the Stradbroke.
Basically that means Sincero must win the QTC Cup to earn himself a spot in the field and then complete an unlikely double in the main event.
No horse has ever managed to do what he’s attempting but there is plenty to like about Sincero who is currently on a six race winning streak.
His competition has obviously being a lot weaker though and he’ll have a change of jockey too with Glen Boss taking over from Chris O’Brien because of the light weight.
The top weight in the nominations went to Black Caviar with 60.5kgs although she’s next to no chance of backing up for the event.
Hay List was next with a seemingly generous 57.5kg but John McNair has said he is also an unlikely starter.
That means the actual top weight will probably be Black Piranha which has won the last two Stradbroke Handicaps, he’s been given 56kg, half a kilogram more than in 2010.
Fellow veteran Sniper’s Bullet was slugged with 55kg but he’s a long way from the gelding which won this event way back in 2007.
Both those horses were beaten by the third placegetter in the BTC Cup Buffering which has come out nicely with just 51kg.
Other horses of note include the two Doncaster Mile place getters, Love Conquers All with 53.5kg and Bold Glance with 52kg.
