Praecido revels in wet to take out Parramattta Cup

The heavily back Praecido revelled in the heavy conditions at Rosehill today when took out the Listed $100,000 Endeavour Foundation Parramatta Cup (2000m).

The David Payne trained gelding recorded his second win from twenty-eight starts and showed his liking for the wet surface when jockey Glyn Schofield pulled him to the middle of the track in the straight.

Schofield was able to keep Praecido balanced and gained the lead at the 250m and held of the strong finish of Jimmy Fortunes to score easing down by half a length.

Leader Sharp Princess set up a handy pace in the  early stages which allowed Schofield on Praecido to settle near the tail of the field and conserve his energy for the final run in.

Kathy O’Hara on Sharp Princess skipped clear on the home turn but was quickly wound in by Praecido who was handling the wet conditions perfectly and looked the winner at the 300m.

Praecido was the best backed runner in the race firming in from $6 to start the favourite at $3.80.

Runner up Jimmy Fortunes started at $13 while second favourite Maules Creek ($5) finished in third spot.

Praecido resumed form a short freshen up when second in a 1500m Handicap at Rosehill on February 11 then wasn’t beaten far when fifth to Single in the Benchmark 87 at Rosehill over 1800m.

“It was made to order today,” Payne said.

“Maybe he won’t stop who knows. He’s always been thereabouts, he’s an honest horse.

“Two-time winner and 550,000 or 560,000 dollars in stakes is not bad.”

The step up in distance to 2000m suited the long striding gelding and Payne will look for another suitable race over the remainder of the Autumn carnival.

Payne had never lost faith in Praecido after he ran second to Lion Tamer in the  2010 Victoria Derby.
