Trainer David Hayes will know after Americain runs in the $250,000 Zipping Classic (2400m) at Sandown on November 12 whether he will train the horse next year.

Hayes’ name has been bandied about as a possible trainer for the 2010 Melbourne Cup winner who will race in Australia after a hit and run trip to Hong Kong in December.

Major owner Gerry Ryan inspected the Euroa property of Hayes recently but hasn’t made a firm decision.

Hayes who hasn’t trained any horses for Ryan is excited by the prospect.

“There are discussions going on but they are not making any decisions until after the Zipping Classic,” Hayes said today.

“I am a chance but it is not confirmed, it would be an honour and exciting to have him if he came.

“But I will wait until after the Classic.”

Americain will be trained by Alain de Royer Dupre until and including the Hong Kong Vase (2400m) at Shatin on December 11.

It is expected the seven-year-old’s strapper Stephanie Nigge will remain with Americain in Australia.

Despite his unlucky fourth in the 2011 Melbourne Cup, Americain is tipped to be named the world’s best stayer.

For Hayes it will be a welcome fillip as the yard is going through a quieter time than usual.

Hayes is a winner of multiple Adelaide, Melbourne and Hong Kong premierships.

He trained the 1994 Melbourne Cup winner Jeune and Cox Plate winners Better Loosen Up   and Fields Of Omagh.
