Helmet will look to return to form in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude

Three-year-old Helmet will be looking to get back into winning form when he runs in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Preludeat Caulfield this weekend.

The flashy galloper finished third in the $1 million Golden Rose last start after a protest lodge by jockey Kerrin McEvoy was upheld, relegating Foxwedge to fourth place.

Trainer Peter Snowden feels that Helmet will be a great danger this Saturday.

“He’s settling well, he did a little bit of work this morning and came through that fine,” Snowden said.

“We’re ready to go.

“His last start was a debacle and the whole race was just upside down but I’ve taken him out to the farm.

“He spent the last week and a half out there… and the last two bits of work he did out there have been excellent.

“He looks well since the run, he’s in probably the best condition I’ve had him in this time through so I’m confident that he’ll run well Saturday.”

Snowden revealed that he has been training Helmet by asking him to jump hurdles between race starts.

“He’s just like a bright child at school he needs a challenge,” Snowden said.

“He learns things quickly but he does dumb things at times.”

The trainer is hopeful that Helmet can get away well in the Guineas Prelude, after a slow opening barrier in the Golden Rose cost him a premium position in the race.

“He races handy as long as he steps away cleanly he’ll be somewhere on the speed,” he said.

“We need to be on the top of our game on Saturday.

“If he does anything right he should run well.”
