Cedarberg To Give Sydney Cup A Miss

Cedarberg

Cedarberg will miss the Sydney Cup in favour of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Cedarberg will not be given the opportunity to prove himself over the 3,200 metre distance in the Sydney Cup this weekend, with his trainer instead deciding to run him in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

While the impressive winner of recent $2.25 million The BMW has more than demonstrated his staying ability, winning over 2,400 metres in stellar style, the two mile distance is yet to be explored.

Trainer Pat Carey was thrilled with his gelding’s endurance ability in The BMW.

“I thought he had some excuses not to finish closer (in the Australian Cup) which gave us heart to go to Sydney and he was a pretty fit racehorse when he ran in the BMW,” Carey said.

“He took on a lot of those horses up there who only had the two runs under their belt and I think it provided him with an opportunity.”

Cedarberg will run in the 2,000 metre Queen Elizabeth Stakes this weekend, with Carey saving a longer 3,200 metre attempt for another day.

“We’ll get through next week and then we’ll have a look at where we sit after that,” Carey said.

“He hasn’t raced over two miles (3200m) but he was pretty strong at the end of the BMW.

“He obviously runs a very strong mile-and-a-half (2400m) and there’s plenty of time to find out if he can run two miles.”
