Dual Group 1 winner and four time Sandown Classic champ Zipping has been retired from racing

Lloyd Williams has announced that crowd favourite Zipping has been retired after failing to recover from a leg injury he sustained during the autumn carnival.

The ten-year-old gelding was notably absent from the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup nominations that were released yesterday.

The questioning surrounding his absence led Lloyd Williams to confirm his retirement via a text message sent from Europe last night.

Zipping, who had a career that spanned 47 starts, posted an impressive 16 wins and 10 placings.

During his notable career, the Danehill gelding ran in four Cox Plates; placing in three of his four attempts.

Zipping was also famous for finishing fourth in three of his four Melbourne Cup runs.

However, the talented gelding was best known for winning a record breaking four consecutive Sandown Classic titles, a race name that was changed to Zipping Classic earlier this year to honour Zipping’s remarkable feat.

Despite his age, Zipping’s most recent Group 1 victory took place just last spring in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

Zipping will end his racing career with an astounding $4.5 million in prize money to his name.
