Jameka has been well-backed in 2016 Melbourne Cup betting markets and he is now into $8 to take out ‘the race that stops a nation’.

Jameka was a slight drifter when the 2016 Melbourne Cup field was released on Saturday afternoon, but she is back onto the second line of betting after she was well supported overnight.

The Myboycharlie mare is the only Australian-bred horse in the 2016 Melbourne Cup field and she has the chance to become the first horse since Ethereal in 2001 to complete the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double.

While Jameka has been one of the best-backed runners in 2016 Melbourne Cup betting markets, Hartnell remains favourite at a quote of $5.50.

Hartnell has remained steady around the $5 mark since the Melbourne Cup field was released and he heads into the race on the back of a credible second place finish behind Winx in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

The only other horse that is available at single-figure Melbourne Cup odds is Oceanographer, who stormed into Melbourne Cup calculations with a fast-finishing victory in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.

Oceanographer was backed into as short as $7 in Melbourne Cup betting markets, but he has drifted back out to a quote of $8.50 in the past 24 hours.

The market mover in 2016 Melbourne Cup betting markets has been European raider Big Orange, who has been backed from $18 into $13 in the past 24 hours.

Big Orange finished a more than credible fifth behind Prince Of Penzance in the Melbourne Cup last year and he heads into the 2016 edition of the race on the back of strong victories in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes (2414m) at Newmarket on July 7 and the Goodwood Cup (3219m) on July 28.

One of the big drifters in 2016 Melbourne Cup betting markets has been Heartbreak City, who is $10 out to $18 since the barrier draw was conducted.

Heartbreak City stamped himself as a Melbourne Cup contender with his victory in the Ebor Handicap (2816m) at York on August 20 and he has the benefit of Joao Moreira in the saddle.

There has been a sprinkling of support in 2016 Melbourne Cup betting markets for Who Shot Thebarman ($41 into $31), Gallante ($71 into $51), Grand Marshal ($41 into $34), Sir John Hawkwood ($101 into $81), Wicklow Brave ($18 into $15) and Assign ($71 into $61), while Curren Mirotic ($26 out to $41), Beautiful Romance ($41 out to $81) and Pentathlon ($101 to $126).
