Mighty Boss caused a major boilover when he arrived at $101 to beat the more fancied runners in the Group 1 $2m Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield during the 2017 Melbourne Spring Carnival and the Mick Price trained colt is one of one hundred and twelve three year olds entered for the Australian Guineas.

As well as Mighty Boss, Price has also has six other three year olds in contention, Cao Cao, Grunt, Holy Snow, I Have Arrived, Silverhawk and Weld.

Price has mapped out an ambitious Autumn Carnival program for the flashy chestnut colt who will take on the older weight for age horses in Group 1 $500,000 Ladbrokes C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 10 before heading to Flemington.

“He’s another one we’re trying to add value to,” Price told racing.com.

“He’s a Caulfield Guineas winner – not saying that’s not enough – but need to do more.

“So I reckon I’m going to run him in the C.F. Orr, the Futurity, and then it is seven days into the Australian Guineas for him there.

“I think that’s the best way to go. The Manfred over 1200m will be too short.

“You’ve got to add value to these colts.”

Trainer Tony McEvoy collected the winning Australian Guineas trophy last year with Hey Doc and has four three year olds in contention this year with Bring Me Roses, Illumicon, Scarecrow and Vinland.

Darren Weir was a winner two years ago with Palentino and the leading Victorian trainer has Cliff’s Edge heading up his eight Australian Guineas hopefuls.

Chris Waller has plenty of ammunition with nine nominated while Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have four entries headed up by last start winner Siege Of Quebec.

The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig are giving themselves every chance to win the Australian Guineas for the first time as co-trainers with fifteen three year olds among the nominations.

David Hayes did collect the winning trophy when the stable was run only under his name with his brilliant filly Miss Finland in 2007.
