Ladbrokes.com.au have Almandin at the top of the market order at $6.50 for the Group 1 $6.25m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) just ahead of the English stayer Marmelo at $8 and Humidor at $10.
Almandin has had three runs this Spring Carnival and kicked off his campaign with a first up second to Pacodali in a 2040m Handicap at The Valley on August 26.
The German import then won the Listed $120,000 Japan Racing Association Trophy (2500m) at Flemington on September 16 before his final Melbourne Cup lead up run when fourth to Amelie’s Star in the Group 3 $300,000 The Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington on October 7.
The Hughie Morrison trained Marmelo put himself into Melbourne Cup contention with an eye catching sixth to the bolter Boom Time in the Group 1 $3.15m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 21.
Third favourite Humidor cemented his spot in the Melbourne Cup with a career best effort when second to super star mare Winx in last week’s Group 1 $3m Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley.
The Darren Weir trained Humidor has been racing consistently all through the Spring Carnival which included a win in the Group 1 $750,000 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 16.
Craig Williams mount Wall Of Fire is a firmer and is now marked at $11 just ahead of Aidan O’Brien’s classy stayer Johannes Vermeer, German trained stayer Red Carnival and Irish stayer Thomas Hobson at $12.
Johannes Vermeer has had two run in Australia for a second to Gailo Chop in the Group 1 $1m Ladbrokes Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 14 followed by a third behind Boom Time and Single Gaze in the Caulfield Cup.
The Lindsay Park trained Boom Time and Nick Olive’s Single Gaze are both marked as $34 chances to win the Melbourne Cup.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Cismontane was the last horse to slot into the twenty-four horse Melbourne Cup field, courtesy of his win in the Group 3 $300,000 Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington today and is rated a $41 chance.
